Omega to support Solar Impulse project in Monaco and launched in Abu Dhabi


Just in time for Solar Impulse’s long awaited round-the-world journey, Omega unveils the latest addition to its legendary Speedmaster family: the Speedmaster Skywalker X-33 Solar Impulse Limited Edition.

The ESA-qualified timepiece commemorates Omega’s pioneering spirit and its relationship with Solar Impulse.

More than a remarkable timepiece, the Speedmaster Skywalker X-33 Solar Impulse Limited Edition is a celebration of a project whose ambitious aim is to circle the globe in an airplane powered only by solar energy, making a bold statement about viable alternatives to non-renewable energy.

Omega has made use of its international platform to share the successes of the Solar Impulse project with the world. Beyond broadcasting the historic milestones and achievements that have highlighted the journey to the Solar Impulse 2’s round-the-world journey, Omega has also contributed a number of important technological innovations to help the whole Solar Impulse team achieve its goals.

Solar Impulse intends to achieve the First Round-The-World Solar Flight next March 2015, after 12 years of research, tests and development. No fuel, but only solar energy and technologies of the future, to prove that pioneering spirit and innovation can really change the world.

As per the Principality of Monaco engagement for defence of environment, the control tower of the solar place to be launched beginning of March has been inaugurated last Tuesday morning in Monaco.

Indeed the control centre is installed in the famous auditorium rainier III baptised for the project “Monaco Centre Control”.

Within this control tower full of computers, around 30 engineers, mathematicians, meteorologists will guide Solar Impulse during the world tour, 24hours a day from anywhere on the globe during the 32 000 kilometers.

Departure is getting closer for Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg as it is planned to be at the beginning of march in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
